Activities Calendar

There are many activities throughout the year in the towns where our houses are located, as well as nearby towns.

This page offers some helpful websites with listings of activities that might be of interest to you.  I also have a section on 'rainy day activities' that might be helpful (you can jump right to that section by clicking here):

for Cape May Activities:

Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities - Mostly Cape May activities, including house tours, boat rides, town tours, carriage rides, and many other events http://www.capemaymac.org/index.html   MaryHouse properties are preferred properties for MAC events, as noted on the MAC 'links-accommodations' web page.

Cape May Publishing offers both a paper-based magazine about Cape May (every month) and an online site with LOTS of information about activities in Cape May  http://www.capemay.com/

Cape May Times is an online newspaper for the community which offers many interesting articles of local interest, as well as a great restaurant guide, among other things.  Many events are shown in the calendar on this website  http://www.capemaytimes.com/

AmericanTowns.com is a national website that offers city-specific information about arts, local politics, activities and events, and many other items of interest.  The Cape May City Chamber of Commerce posts information on this site  http://www.americantowns.com/nj/capemay

Into specific hobbies or activities?  How about these:

Bird Watching News:  Cape May Birding Hotline

Dolphin and Whale Watching Boat Trips:  Cape May Whale Watcher
Historical Hour Tour Information:  (see the MAC site for all the house and B&B tours, but refer to this site for the Historical Society's own property and its open schedule for tours Cape May Historical Society
Haunted house tours (do you believe in Ghosts?  there are many in Cape May who do!)  Haunted Cape May Tours
Deep Sea Fishing:  There are several boats available for charter.  You can see them at the Cape May Marina (as you enter Cape May), but for 'party boat' trips (pay per-person), we recommend the Miss Chris Marina & Fishing Center
Nature Center:  Activities include indoor lectures, exhibits and workshops.  Outdoor activities are also available on land and sea (including kayak tours!).  Many things to do, in good or bad weather.  The new building offers many lovely spots, including an observation tower and deck with terrific views of the Harbor.  Cape May Nature Center

Rainy Day Suggestions:

Activities in Cape May County (the region of Cape May COUNTY covers the area surrounding the southern-most 20 miles of the Garden State!)  Most of the suggestions here are good year-round and not just in the rainy weather!

Aviation Museum – just 3 miles North of Cape May and 1 mile south of Wildwood, this is a big indoor space that has lots of old aircraft and interesting displays, very ‘hands on’ so the children enjoy it.  It is located at the regional airport, which is also interesting.  For more information, click on the following link:  http://www.usnasw.org/Advertise.htm

Cape May Lighthouse – there are a few buildings here, with indoor exhibits, as well as a nice park area and a nearby beach ( Sunset Beach ) with shops and restaurants so several ways to get out of the weather.  Here is information about the Lighthouse  http://www.nps.gov/history/maritime/light/capemay.htm (you can tire the kids out by having them climb it!).  Here is a link to the Sunset Beach area, near the lighthouse  http://www.njsouth.com/index-sunsetbeach.htm

Nature Center of Cape May - there are many things to see inside the main building as well as the educational building.  Check their schedule for indoor workshops.  On rainy days, the center brings some of the activities indoors.  http://www.njaudubon.org/centers/nccm/

Cape May Ferry Terminal – more than just a building, the terminal has shops and restaurants and wonderful views.  The building is free (of course, lots of ways to spend money once you are inside), but it is a great place to be inside and get a close-up look at the ferries and the water.  Especially if you go upstairs to the big room and the glassed-in walkways to the ferry.  Good protection from the weather with some nice views  http://www.cmlf.com/Terminals

Cape May County Zoo – has both indoor and outdoor exhibits, so you can go here if the weather is ‘iffy’ and still have a good time (duck into the monkey or bird houses if it starts to rain).  The price is right (free!) and it is amazingly large.  There is a great park there for picnics, with covered areas, and a nice lake and gazebo.  http://www.capemaycountyzoo.org/html/zoo_cape_may_county_zoological.html

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and Park - in the Anglesea section of North Wildwood (the most-northern part, off exit 6 of the Parkway).  This is a lovely outdoor space, as well as indoor lighthouse.  Different from the towering lighthouse of Cape May, this one has a more 'short and squatty' appearance but is still functioning and doing a great job!  http://www.herefordlighthouse.org/

Wildwood Bowling and Activity Center – even on rainy days, the Wildwood boardwalk is not a bad place to be and it is just 4 miles from Cape May .  Many of the arcades are under-cover, there are movie theatres on the boardwalk, and you can find fun there as well as some good food at reasonable prices (e.g. good pizza, etc. that would be enjoyed by the young ones without breaking the bank!).  Of course, there is always the ‘tram car’ which offers a fun ride up and down the boardwalk (and if the weather is really bad, there are plastic shields they can roll down to protect you).   Here is an article about the tram car, its service route, and other things like it:   http://www.the-wildwoods.com/news/tram.html and here is an article about the Wildwood –based bowling alley that also has arcade games and fun food for families  http://www.3jwildwoodbowl.com/  and, finally, here is something about the arcades and activities of the boardwalk in Wildwood (still open on weekends)  http://www.moreyspiers.com/

Wildwood Historical Museum - so you thought that Wildwood was only about Doo-Wop?  There is quite a bit of history to the town of Wildwood, including its roots with the names like 'Five Mile Beach' and  'Holly Beach'.  Learn more about all of that in this interesting museum  http://www.the-wildwoods.com/history/museum.html

Other things:  this website has details about other attractions in Cape May that you can consider if the weather is good or bad (or in-between):   http://www.capemayviews.com/Attractions/cape_may_attractions.htm

Of course, there is always the movies!  You can rent movies or go to a local theatre.  Here is a link to nearby theatres:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/showtimes/theaters.htm?view=county&id=Cape%20May&p=.htm   (if you choose to stay in and rent movies or watch movies that you bring along, several local restaurants, steak shops and pizza shops will deliver so you can stay inside and just enjoy the time, completely!).  Check the phone book in the house for a complete directory of local restaurants (if you find something you like, call them to check their delivery options or take-out options).
